SC Learns Announces Name Change to The Heron Institute

New Name Reflects Growth and Expanded Vision for Education in South Carolina

Columbia, S.C. – March 17, 2025 – SC Learns, the nonprofit organization governing two of South Carolina’s leading statewide virtual charter schools, is officially rebranding as The Heron Institute. The new name reflects the organization’s evolution, its commitment to innovative education, and its growing role in shaping the future of student success across the state.

Founded to provide high-quality, flexible learning options, The Heron Institute oversees Cyber Academy of South Carolina (CASC) and Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVA). In addition to school governance, the organization has expanded its focus to include philanthropy, research, and advocacy through its philanthropic arm, The Heron Foundation.

As part of this expanded vision, The Heron Institute’s Board of Directors recently approved a significant investment in the establishment of Community Resource Centers across the state. These centers will provide academic support, career training, social services, and community engagement opportunities for students and families. The flagship 9,000-square-foot center will launch in Greenville, S.C., with future locations planned for Columbia, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and beyond.

The Heron Institute will continue to provide high-quality, student-centered education through its virtual schools while expanding efforts to develop new partnerships, support educators, and advocate for policies that benefit students statewide.

The name change is effective immediately, and all branding, communication, and online presence will transition to The Heron Institute in the coming weeks.
