Sea Islands Academy's Story
Sea Islands Academy is a community-centered school rooted in the rich traditions of the Gullah Geechee culture. Originally known as Sea Islands Heritage Charter School, the academy was reimagined in 2024 by Alana Jenkins to focus on place-based instruction and personalized learning. The goal? To help students grow into confident, self-aware individuals who understand their identity and can shape their own futures.
Through a partnership with The Heron Institute, students engage in online learning as part of the microschool model. But their education goes beyond the classroom—they also take part in daily responsibilities around the facility and enjoy outdoor experiences that connect them to their cultural heritage and the natural environment. The school has thoughtfully set up separate spaces for synchronous and asynchronous learning, and students are navigating Canvas with ease. We look forward to supporting their continued growth and helping meet the needs that will enrich the learning journey for every student.
